Taiwan Alerts US on China’s Regional Strategies Amid Trump’s Arms Deal Deliberations

Taiwan’s Appeal to the US on China’s Regional Movements

Taiwan’s top diplomat, Alexander Yui, has alerted the United States about China’s regional ambitions. This message comes as President Donald Trump considers a substantial $14 billion arms package for Taiwan.

Yui emphasized Taiwan’s role as a critical defense line against China’s broader goals. Taiwan’s importance to global supply chains, particularly in semiconductor production, underscores the necessity of US support. These semiconductors constitute 90% of the world’s advanced chips.

Chinese Vessel Activity Around Taiwan

In the aftermath of Trump’s Beijing meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping, China has been deploying a significant number of vessels near Taiwan. The secretary general of Taiwan’s National Security Council, Joseph Wu, confirmed this on Saturday. He stated that over 100 Chinese vessels have been sighted around the First Island Chain.

“In this part of the world, China is the sole problem disrupting the status quo and jeopardizing regional peace and stability,” Wu noted on social media.

Wu shared a graphic illustrating the presence of Chinese ships in the South China Sea, East China Sea, and near Taiwan and the Philippines.

US Weapons Shipment Pause

The US has temporarily halted weapons shipments to Taiwan, as revealed by Acting US Navy Secretary Hung Cao. This decision aligns with the strategic requirements for the ‘Epic Fury’ operation. Cao informed US lawmakers of this pause during a Senate Appropriations Defense Subcommittee hearing.

Taiwanese authorities, as per The Associated Press, were not informed about the potential pause in arms deliveries. Meanwhile, US lawmakers had approved the $14 billion weapons sale to Taiwan earlier in January, though Trump has not signed off yet.

Diplomatic Tensions with China

The pause announcement follows the Trump-Xi summit, where Chinese authorities reiterated Taiwan as China’s primary issue in US diplomatic relations. Mao Ning, a spokesperson for the Chinese Foreign Ministry, stressed this point, highlighting the importance of managing the Taiwan question for stable bilateral relations.

A recent maritime incident underscored these tensions. The USS Chung-Hoon encountered a Chinese naval vessel crossing its path in the Taiwan Strait, necessitating evasive action by the American destroyer. The event highlighted the delicate circumstances in US-China military engagements in the region.

Fox News Digital sought additional comments from the White House, Taiwanese government representatives, and the Chinese Foreign Ministry.
