Democratic National Committee’s 2024 Election Autopsy Under Fire

New York Times opinion columnist Michelle Goldberg criticized the Democratic National Committee’s 2024 election analysis, calling it “mysterious,” “anticlimactic,” and “ridiculous.” She expressed her concerns about the report’s release, describing it as a “disaster.” Goldberg specifically targeted Democratic National Committee Chair Ken Martin for his inconsistent rhetoric about the report.

Goldberg noted the absence of key terms like “Israel” and “Gaza” in the 192-page document. According to her, the report fails to explain why the Democratic Party lost significant numbers of Black and Latino men or why they struggled to connect with disengaged voters. She even suggested that the document could have been produced by artificial intelligence.

Even former Vice President Kamala Harris, who faced defeat against President Donald Trump, is part of the backlash against the report.

While Martin initially pledged to release the autopsy, he later decided against it, which Goldberg claimed fueled speculation and suspicion. Some believed Martin was shielding Kamala Harris for future elections, while others thought the report might not exist at all.

Conservative columnist Ramesh Ponnuru pointed out the report’s omissions. It lacked discussion on President Joe Biden’s age, the Democrats’ handling of the border crisis, and the party’s diminishing appeal to religious voters. Additionally, it did not address the party’s stance on some left-wing policies.

Released Thursday, the report argues that the Democratic Party has weakened its structure due to reduced voter registration, decreased support for state parties, and insufficient engagement with certain voter demographics.

The report also emphasizes the need to focus on voters in Middle America and the South. This has led to tension within the party, with Chair Ken Martin distancing himself from the document, criticizing its quality and expressing that it doesn’t meet his standards.

Martin stated that the report was published for transparency. He ensured that it was released “in its entirety, unedited and unabridged,” including annotations for unverifiable claims.
