A man from the Philippines, identified as Ceasar Tubay Gelacio Jr., has been arrested and charged with importing a controlled substance. This was after federal agents found cocaine worth $6.4 million on an oil tanker aimed at a Mexican drug cartel, as per the announcement from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Central District of California.
The coordinated operation involved Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) and the U.S. Coast Guard. It took place aboard the Motor Tanker Aquatravesia, a crude oil vessel at the Port of Los Angeles.
A Coast Guard narcotics detection dog alerted authorities to a possible illegal substance, which led investigators to discover approximately 500 pounds of cocaine, valued at around $6.4 million, according to the Department of Homeland Security.
“This operation highlights Homeland Security Investigations’ unwavering commitment to combating transnational crime and safeguarding the United States from illicit narcotics,” commented Eddy Wang, Special Agent in Charge of HSI Los Angeles.
Wang credited HSI’s quick response and investigative skill in detecting and seizing over 226 kilograms of cocaine intended for distribution within communities. He reiterated the agency’s dedication to pursuing those who try to misuse ports and transport systems, while working with partners to disrupt criminal organizations threatening public safety.
Capt. Stacey Crecy from Coast Guard Sector Los Angeles-Long Beach, acknowledged the seizure as a clear demonstration of coordinated efforts among DHS agencies. These efforts aim to dismantle operations involved in trafficking drugs.
“Through stellar coordination, we effectively detained the suspect and removed the contraband from the vessel to protect the maritime transportation system and facilitate commerce as quickly as possible,” said Crecy.
The Greek-owned, Liberian-flagged Aquatravesia last departed from Ecuador and was carrying a large drug shipment intended for a Mexican cartel, as revealed by an affidavit filed in the case. Crew members reportedly found several packages hidden in the ship’s garbage room.
The U.S. Coast Guard and Homeland Security Investigations boarded the tanker soon after its arrival at the Port of Los Angeles. During the investigation, prosecutors learned from the ship’s captain that the drugs belonged to Gelacio, who intended to distribute them while the ship cruised near Mexico.
Despite attempts by cartel members to communicate with the tanker before reaching Mexican waters, law enforcement managed to guide the vessel to the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach, where further actions were taken.
If convicted, Gelacio faces the possibility of life in prison. Additionally, two other individuals were arrested in connection with this operation. The case highlights the continuous efforts by federal agencies to thwart drug smuggling operations and maintain community safety.
