In watch collecting, three brands stand out for their legendary status: Patek Philippe, Vacheron Constantin, and Audemars Piguet, commonly referred to as the Holy Trinity. These brands are esteemed for their heritage, quality, and craftsmanship. While other high-end companies, such as A. Lange & Söhne or Breguet, produce beautiful watches, releases from the Holy Trinity often generate greater attention.
Recently, a surprising collaboration was announced. Audemars Piguet, known for their iconic “Royal Oak” designed by Gerald Genta, partnered with Swatch for a new project. The “Royal Pop” collaboration is unexpected. Audemars Piguet usually sells high-end “timepieces” for $30,000 and up, while Swatch is known for accessible watches priced between $350 and $400.
The “Royal Pop” was unveiled in early May. Unlike traditional models, it features bright colors and utilizes Swatch’s bioceramic material. Designed as a pocket watch with a lanyard, the Royal Pop retails for $400-425. Anticipation for its in-store-only release on May 16 was high, drawing significant interest.
A massive demand for $400 watches indicates robust consumer interest, despite economic concerns.
Crowds gathered, sometimes days in advance, to purchase the Royal Pop. Due to safety concerns, Swatch announced several stores remained closed without selling watches. On Long Island, New York, unruly crowds at the Roosevelt Field Mall prompted police intervention. A video showed an officer overwhelmed by the crowd.
According to the New York Post, four people were arrested at the scene, including one on a “second-degree assault charge.” Nineteen Swatch stores closed for safety reasons, including the SoHo store, which never opened due to a large, disorderly crowd. Similar issues occurred overseas, with London and other locations facing challenges.
Many buyers intended to resell the Royal Pop, listed on eBay for $1,600-$2,000. Despite claims of economic hardship, thousands lined up for $400+ watches, and others purchased them for $2,000+. Some complete sets of various colors listed for over $10,000.
The AP x Swatch “Royal Pop” offers collectors a chance to own a watch associated with the Holy Trinity at a lower price point. This opportunity reflects strong market interest, indicating that economic conditions may be better than perceived.
