Rex, a giant sulcata tortoise spotted wandering down a suburban Phoenix street, captured the attention of neighbors, sparking efforts to find his owner. Rex had lived with the Westfall family in Scottsdale, Arizona, while they searched for where he belonged.

Encounter with the Community

One warm evening, residents watched in amazement as Rex ambled along, raising questions about his origin and needs. This unusual event highlighted the challenges of owning such a pet, widely popular despite its demanding care requirements.

Many people become enamored with baby sulcatas, only to realize they grow to be the third largest tortoises globally, weighing up to 200 pounds and living for 150 years. Caring for them requires significant commitment, including providing large enclosures, clean water, and warm shelter.

Sulcata Ownership Challenges

Dan Marchand from the Phoenix Herpetological Sanctuary explains that new owners often lack knowledge about the extensive care sulcatas require. He mentions that educating potential owners is crucial to prevent abandonment, as highlighted by the sanctuary’s current population of about 700 tortoises.

A similar concern is echoed by Teri Boyungs of Eclecteri Tortoise & Reptile Rescue. Her organization manages around 1,250 sulcatas yearly, indicating a widespread issue with pet abandonment.

Rex’s Temporary Stay

Rex’s adventure nearly led to his being abandoned, but the Westfall family’s involvement changed his fate. Their young daughter noticed Rex, leading to neighbors gathering and attempting to temporarily care for him by posting signs and providing food.

Eventually, Rex was placed in their backyard, where he was affectionately nicknamed ‘Chicken Nugget’ and given the comforts he needed until his original owner was found.

Return to His Owner and New Beginnings

Rex’s story traces back to Frank Boxberger, who had him for 15 years. Rex had been a backyard companion and part of family gatherings. However, Rex’s impact on the landscape led Boxberger to seek alternative arrangements, ultimately resulting in his escape during a house tour when a gate was left open.

Once Boxberger’s daughter identified Rex from a neighborhood flyer, arrangements began for a new plan. He was offered to the Westfall family, who regrettably could not keep him.

Rex’s New Home

Garret Beshey, a plumber involved with the real estate transaction at Rex’s last location, expressed interest in adopting him. Aware of the pet trade issues, Beshey expressed his intent to provide a suitable home for Rex in his spacious backyard.

As Beshey transported Rex to his new dwelling, he considered renaming him ‘Bowser’ after a familiar video game character. Rex’s journey involved navigating neighborhood foliage, needing some help to reach his new abode. Finally, Rex was loaded into Beshey’s truck, marking the beginning of his new chapter.

As Rex departed, the community bid farewell, knowing he was moving to a home ready to meet his needs.
