The Ukraine peace process is currently stalled, according to the Kremlin, which anticipates a resumption. This statement comes after U.S. President Donald Trump mentioned that Russian airstrikes on Ukraine could hinder peace negotiations. During a recent press briefing, Trump emphasized how a Russian missile attack on a Kyiv apartment resulted in 24 deaths, including three children, potentially delaying peace efforts.
Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov highlighted the significance of continuous Ukrainian strikes on civilian areas in Russia. Recently, Moscow experienced its most substantial drone attack in over a year, leading to at least three casualties in the region surrounding the capital. Debris also fell at Sheremetyevo Airport, Russia’s largest, without causing damage.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy verified the drone attacks, labeling them “entirely justified.” These attacks seem to be a counter-response to recent Russian assaults on Kyiv. Ukrainian authorities reported eight injuries from Russian drone attacks, while Ukrainian operations resulted in one death in Khimki and two fatalities in Pogorelki, as stated by local Governor Andrei Vorobyev.
“Our responses to Russia’s prolongation of the war and attacks on our cities and communities are entirely justified,” stated President Zelenskyy.
In Moscow, a nighttime strike injured 12 individuals, mainly near the city’s oil refinery. The technology of the refinery remained undamaged, according to Mayor Sergei Sobyanin. The Indian Embassy in Moscow announced the death of an Indian worker in a drone attack, adding to the confusion surrounding the reported casualties.
In the latest attack, Russian defenses intercepted 81 drones targeting Moscow, marking a significant assault since the comprehensive invasion of Ukraine began in February 2022. The Russian Defense Ministry claimed the destruction of 556 drones across various locations.
Ukraine’s drones, reportedly traveling over 500 kilometers from Ukrainian territory, managed to penetrate Russian air defenses. This capability signifies Ukraine’s unyielding stance against Russian aggression, as emphasized by Zelenskyy.
An expert from the International Institute for Strategic Studies, Nigel Gould Davies, asserted that Ukraine’s intensive strikes are in retaliation for Russia’s attacks on Kyiv. These airstrikes followed the conclusion of a brief ceasefire during Russia’s Victory Day parade. Both nations accuse each other of breaching the pause in hostilities.
The current situation underscores Ukraine’s ability to deliver impactful strikes near the Russian capital, unveiling vulnerabilities and fostering anxiety within Russia. Gould Davies mentioned Russia’s battlefield struggles, worsening economic conditions, and increased internet censorship as contributing factors. Despite these pressures, there seems no immediate inclination from Russia to enter peace talks.
Recent satellite imagery captured fires at the Tuapse refinery, highlighting the depth of Ukrainian drone operations. These efforts aim to curtail Moscow’s oil exports, which finance military operations in Ukraine. While the economic consequences are uncertain, the environmental repercussions are affecting Russian territories far removed from the conflict zones.
