Amtrak Resumes Service After Fires Near Philadelphia Tracks

Service Resumption After Track Fires

Amtrak service between New York and Philadelphia resumed Wednesday afternoon. This followed a shutdown caused by two fires near the tracks in North Philadelphia. Amtrak Northeast provided an update on X, noting ongoing delays due to single tracking near the Philadelphia area. They expressed apologies for any inconvenience caused.

Impact of Heat Wave

The service disruptions occurred amidst a severe heat wave affecting Pennsylvania. The heat wave brought triple-digit temperatures with high humidity, straining infrastructure and igniting brush fires across the state. A ‘Temporary Hold’ was implemented earlier as firefighters worked near the tracks.

Details of the Fires

“Both fires are believed to have been caused by sparks from the same train igniting brush nearby,” said Rachel Cunningham, Philadelphia Fire Communications Director, in an email to Newsweek.

More than 300 firefighters responded to the two fires, which reached two-alarm status. No injuries were reported.

The first fire occurred at North 2nd Street and West Erie Avenue around 1 p.m. Crews went to a second blaze at West Glenwood Avenue just 15 minutes later. The first fire was controlled by 2 p.m., while the second was under control shortly after 4 p.m., according to Cunningham.

Cunningham noted the wind contributed to the spread of the fires. R&R companies supported the ongoing firefighter efforts due to high temperatures.

While track fires aren’t common, they do occur yearly during hot and dry conditions. Firefighters are skilled in dealing with these fires, managing logistics effectively.

Amtrak Response and Ongoing Investigations

Before controlling the fires, an Amtrak spokesperson informed Newsweek that emergency personnel were trying to contain and extinguish a brush fire about five miles east of Gray 30th Street Station. The fire had spread to a nearby scrapyard.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives task force is assisting the Philadelphia fire marshal, as noted in a post on X.

Amtrak canceled at least two routes due to delays: route 654 from Harrisburg to Philadelphia and route 609 from Philadelphia to Harrisburg.

The New York-Philadelphia segment is crucial, carrying tens of thousands of passengers daily. Service disruption can affect the entire East Coast rail network, impacting as far south as Washington and north to Boston.

Future Updates

Amtrak stated that service may continue to experience delays. Travelers should expect rolling updates throughout the afternoon. It is advised to check the Amtrak app or website for real-time status before heading to stations.
