Sinkhole Disrupts Operations at LaGuardia Airport

A significant sinkhole discovered during a routine check led to the closure of one of the main runways at New York’s LaGuardia Airport on Wednesday morning. This information was shared via a social media post by the airport.

As the Port Authority works closely with airlines and airport partners, travelers should be prepared for substantial delays and cancellations. Thunderstorms are also predicted to impact the area further, worsening the situation.

This incident marks the second recent occurrence of a sinkhole in the region. A similar incident occurred on May 14 on the Long Island Expressway, increasing concerns about potential weather-related ground instability.

The runway closure comes nearly two months after the tragic crash of Air Canada Flight 8646 on March 22. During that incident, a CRJ-900 aircraft collided with a fire truck on the same runway, leading to the deaths of two pilots and multiple injuries. This event has kept the spotlight on the safety of LaGuardia’s airfields.

Discovery and Repair Efforts at LaGuardia

Port Authority crews found the sinkhole at approximately 11 a.m. during the airport’s standard airfield inspection, resulting in the immediate closure of Runway 4/22. Emergency engineering and construction teams quickly arrived to examine the cause and initiate repairs.

Local news networks broadcast aerial footage showing at least a dozen crew members addressing the problem, utilizing equipment such as an excavator.

Flight Delays and Broader Impact

Runway 4/22 is essential for both arriving and departing flights at LaGuardia, one of the airport’s only two runways. Its abrupt closure adds to the operational challenges posed by forecasted thunderstorms, complicating the situation at one of the country’s busiest airports.

Extended closures might disrupt the entire Northeast air-traffic system, affecting flight schedules across the United States. For instance, by 2 p.m. Eastern Time, the FAA reported arriving flights experiencing an average delay of 1 hour and 38 minutes.

Expected Developments

Engineers are currently assessing the sinkhole’s dimensions, origins, and any structural impacts on the runway. Repair operations will progress “as quickly and safely as possible,” according to the Port Authority. Further updates will be provided once it is clear if the damage is confined or indicative of a more extensive problem.

Travelers should expect ongoing delays into the night and are advised to check with their airlines for current flight information.
