President Donald Trump delivered a commencement address at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy in New London, Connecticut for the second time as commander in chief. His speech combined humor and commendation for the maritime profession of the graduates. However, it included unexpected shifts in subject matter.
On Wednesday, President Trump stated, “I’m thrilled to become the first president to ever give a second keynote address to this storied institution.” He addressed a crowd of young men and women dressed in immaculate white uniforms, expressing, “I am very proud of that honor.” Despite his assertion, Trump is not the first president to give a second keynote address at the academy. Previous presidents, including Bill Clinton, George W. Bush, and Barack Obama, have also done so.
The speech highlighted the significance of the Coast Guard in relation to the Iran war. Although this topic was mentioned, the cadets remained mostly reserved, offering sporadic applause.
In 2017, during Trump’s first speech at the academy, he faced different challenges and often emphasized resilience. He stated, “You have to put your head down and fight, fight, fight.” In his recent address, Trump echoed similar sentiments: “Whatever danger comes our way, you will fight, fight, fight.”
