New Mate and Chick for Octavia, Pale Male’s Last Companion

Good morning, it’s Wednesday. Today, we explore the newest developments at a Fifth Avenue location once famous for Pale Male, the celebrated red-tailed hawk. We will also look into the resolution of the Long Island Rail Road strike.

Octavia, Pale Male’s last known mate, has returned to their Upper East Side home with a new partner, and a baby hawk has been spotted there. This marks a fresh chapter for Octavia, who was known for her time with Pale Male from the 1990s until his passing in 2023.

Stella Hamilton, an avid bird watcher who has been following Octavia since 2014, noted the “drama” in Octavia’s life. Even during Pale Male’s era, Octavia was seen meeting discreetly with other hawks. After Pale Male’s death, Hamilton observed that Octavia was selective in choosing a new mate, often rejecting potential companions for their inadequate nest-building skills.

The birding community has not settled on a name for Octavia’s new partner. However, observers have noted the pair acting like new parents, frequently flying off to gather food such as rats or pigeons. A small chick, described as a fuzzy whitish ball, has been occasionally visible.

Octavia previously had chicks with Pale Male in 2013. D. Bruce Yolton, another bird enthusiast, expressed his nostalgia for the Pale Male era and mentioned his assumption that Octavia’s time for motherhood had passed.
