Criticism Over Trump’s Photos With Putin and Xi in the White House

President Donald Trump faces criticism after photos with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping were displayed in the White House. Images shared by MS NOW journalist Jacqueline Alemany show the framed photographs near the White House’s Palm Room doors, prompting backlash online. A Republican strategist labeled it “an insult to Democratic values,” while an anti-Trump group questioned why “communist authoritarians” are featured prominently in the White House.

The controversy mirrors a similar situation in January when a PBS correspondent published a photograph of Trump and Putin. The White House previously told Newsweek there was “nothing unusual” about showing images from Trump’s public events with world leaders. Newsweek reached out for further comment.

Details of the Displayed Photos

Alemany indicated in her post that the photos are located near the Palm Room doors, linking the West Wing to the residence. The photo with Putin dates back to their August 15, 2025, summit at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson in Anchorage, Alaska. Trump referred to the image as a gift from Putin, although the White House hasn’t confirmed this.

Public Reactions

Critics have voiced concerns, referencing human rights abuses by Russia and China and highlighting ideological differences with America. Republican strategist Brittany Martinez stated, “No U.S. president should display framed photos of dictators in the White House.” Former White House adviser Yvanna D. Cancela and media commentator Brian Krassenstein also expressed disbelief online.

The Lincoln Project, co-founded by conservative lawyer George Conway, questioned the presence of the images, stating, “If ‘communism is the greatest threat,’ why hang pictures of communist authoritarians in the White House?”

Trump’s Diplomatic Approach

Amidst ongoing tensions, Trump has pursued diplomacy with Putin and Xi. Despite the military conflict between Russia and Ukraine and trade issues with China, Trump invited Putin to the G20 conference in Miami. Though Putin is unlikely to attend, the invitation was seen as controversial.

In August, Trump welcomed Putin to the Alaska summit, seeking a resolution between Russia and Ukraine. Simultaneously, Trump’s engagement with Xi in May and September 2025 indicates efforts to resolve conflicts involving China’s allies, Russia and Iran, while exploring new trade deals.

During Xi’s state visit, Trump presented a bald eagle statue to him, symbolizing America’s national emblem. Trump highlighted the enduring ties between the nations, stating that both leaders aim to “promote prosperity and security for future generations.”
