President Donald Trump made a brief appearance at the Presidents Cup, spending over an hour observing players tee off. His visit drew thousands of spectators, many dressed in patriotic attire, while protesters remained distant from the scene.
Before the final round, Trump remarked, “These people want to see golf. They don’t want to hear speeches.” He added that the country is doing great, emphasizing its improved state.
This marked Trump’s first visit to the Chicago area since winning the 2024 presidential election. His appearance coincided with the anniversary of his administration’s increased immigration enforcement in Chicago during Operation Midway Blitz.
In his brief speech, Trump criticized “the fake news media,” predicting reports of unfavorable reception. He spoke of the top players present and anticipated an exciting day of golf.
“I’ll only say this: our country is doing great, better than ever before.” – President Trump
He stayed to watch several players and engaged with some as they arrived on the course. The International team had performed strongly, leading the U.S. team and needing to win five of the 12 singles matches to secure the cup.
Earlier in the week, global attention was on Trump as he welcomed Chinese President Xi Jinping to Washington and addressed the United Nations General Assembly. Trump suggested potential severe measures against Iran unless a resolution was reached in the ongoing conflict.
Over the weekend, Trump attended a college football game in Tennessee before arriving in Chicago. The Presidents Cup anticipated over 30,000 spectators daily from Thursday to Sunday, as reported by the Daily Herald.
Trump has previously expressed criticism toward Chicago, notably in past discussions surrounding immigration enforcement. Last year, he made comments threatening the city with phrases implying military action.
Sunday’s clear weather saw many spectators cheering Trump, with fans donning “Make America Great Again” hats and flag-themed apparel.
Not all were pleased with Trump’s attendance. Protesters and supporters faced off at the Medinah Country Club. Alex August, feeling uneasy about his presence, crafted an emergency plan. Evan Neilson, sharing the stage, noted Trump’s attendance overshadowed the event, reflecting the nation’s current political climate.
As honorary chairman of the tournament, Trump held a customary role also assumed by Presidents Biden and Obama in previous years.
Medinah lies in a community surrounded by Itasca, Roselle, and Bloomingdale. Event preparations were extensive, involving construction of temporary structures to accommodate the occasion, according to the Daily Herald.
