Cuban Immigrants Arrested for Drug Trafficking and Gun Charges

Authorities have detained two immigrants from Cuba with criminal pasts, accusing them of drug trafficking and possessing stolen firearms. Cesar Valdes, 89, and Magdaleno Medina, 73, were both illegally residing in the U.S. for over four decades. Their recent legal troubles surfaced following an undercover drug bust by the Miami Police Department.

On August 19, an undercover officer purchased $60 worth of cocaine from Medina. Police later conducted a narcotics search on September 9 at a trailer, where Valdes was also present. During the search, authorities discovered numerous bags of cocaine and marijuana, ammunition, stolen firearms, and over $4,800 in cash.

Both men initially entered the U.S. near Key West, Florida, in May 1980 without proper inspection. Medina, with four prior felony convictions related to drug offenses, had been issued a final order of exclusion in 1996. His previous convictions remain undisclosed, including whether he served jail time.

Valdes also has a criminal history in Miami-Dade County, including cocaine possession and probation violation during the 1980s and 1990s. He received a final order of exclusion in 1993. It remains unknown if he served jail time for these offenses.

Currently, Medina faces eight felony charges involving drug trafficking and possession of firearms as a felon. Valdes is charged with five related felony offenses. Both men are detained in a Miami jail with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detainers.

An ICE official emphasized that the agency would enforce the law vigorously, deport criminal illegal aliens, and expressed that such individuals are not welcome in the U.S. Valdes and Medina have pleaded not guilty to their charges. Their attorney refrained from commenting on the cases.
