Cubs Gear Up for Wild-Card Series Amid Pitching Decisions

The Chicago Cubs face a decisive day as the regular season concludes on Sunday. This day will clarify their wild-card series opponent and finalize their pitching strategy for the opening round set to start on Tuesday. The primary concern is the status of right-hander Kevin Gausman.

Gausman’s availability for the wild-card series depends on his condition after an essential bullpen session scheduled for Sunday at Tropicana Field, Tampa, Florida. Last Wednesday, Gausman exited a game against the Miami Marlins in the sixth inning due to a left shoulder injury he sustained during a critical play at third base. This shoulder had been dislocated during his high school years.

“Don’t worry about who’s going to start, worry about how we’re going to get 27 outs.”

Cubs manager Craig Counsell revealed that Gausman has not undergone imaging on his shoulder and is under continuous monitoring. Gausman attempted to play catch on Friday, but persistent soreness remains a concern. According to Counsell, Sunday will be crucial in determining Gausman’s readiness for their postseason plans.

Throughout recent games, Gausman’s performance has varied. However, his last two starts have seen him pitch into the sixth inning, allowing two runs per game. His veteran experience is key, having previously reached the World Series with the Toronto Blue Jays.

Despite his doubts on Thursday about being ready for the playoffs, Gausman expressed determination to prepare. He acknowledged the role of his left shoulder in his pitching delivery, emphasizing the importance of maintaining a strong front side for control and leverage.

In the event Gausman is unavailable for the wild-card opener, left-hander Matthew Boyd might be called upon. Shota Imanaga is also a consideration depending on Sunday’s use. Right-hander Clay Holmes is positioned as a potential choice for Game 2 on Wednesday or Game 3 if needed. Left-hander David Peterson, who has been performing well, is anticipated to contribute as part of Counsell’s postseason pitching strategy.

The Cubs are wisely preparing for multiple rotation scenarios. Peterson highlighted the significance of being ready and flexible, whether starting or relieving in playoffs. He described this period as a challenging but advantageous time, emphasizing their objective to perform their best and support the team.
