Shifting Dynamics in Labor Politics

In 2026, the landscape of labor politics faces significant challenges. The influence of organized labor has waned over time, but it is gaining unexpected support from both the Left and the Right. This development highlights a unique shift in alliances within the political sphere.

Several key private-sector union contracts across the nation are set to expire later this summer. Included among these are agreements covering 20,000 Verizon employees in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic, as well as 25,000 steel industry workers in the Midwest. These expirations have the potential to impact a substantial number of workers and their respective industries.

Earlier in the year, labor tensions nearly came to a head for Stop & Shop in New England. The company narrowly avoided a strike by reaching an agreement with 28,000 food workers. This narrow miss underscores the ongoing contention in labor relations this year.
