Costco’s Motor Oil Rationing: Rising Prices and Supply Concerns

Costco has initiated restrictions on the quantity of its Kirkland Signature motor oil customers can purchase each week. This measure limits buying to two boxes weekly as fuel costs continue to escalate across the nation.

Higher Prices and Purchase Limits

The membership-based warehouse retailer has traditionally offered bulk products at lower prices. This recent limitation follows a price increase for their full synthetic motor oil, reported by The Auto Wire. Previously costing in the mid-$30s, the 5-quart, two-bottle case is now priced at $57.99, as indicated on Costco’s website.

Costco advises members of a “limit of one transaction per membership, with a maximum of two units every seven days.”

Other motor oil products are similarly restricted. For instance, sales of Mobil 1 six-quart cases, priced at $44, are limited to five per member.

Reasons for Restrictions

The Auto Wire suggests two primary reasons for these purchase limits. Costco might doubt its ability to maintain stock levels or foresee future price surges that would make bulk buying presently unwise.

Base oil, a refined crude oil product, constitutes 80% to 90% of synthetic motor oils. With the recent rise in oil prices, companies are favoring conversions into petroleum products, reducing motor oil production. Hence, a supply squeeze raises costs at every level, impacting even budget retailers.

Market Impacts

Oil prices have soared, with Brent crude surpassing $100 a barrel, due to geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, particularly recent attacks by Yemen’s Houthi forces on Saudi Arabia.

As of now, competitors like Walmart, AutoZone, and Amazon have not imposed similar purchasing restrictions. Prices vary, with Walmart listing equivalent brand synthetic oil at approximately $32 per 5-quart jug. AutoZone’s two-bottle pack of Mobil 1 Standard Full Synthetic is priced at $40.99, while Amazon offers the product at $31.97 for one bottle and $63.94 for two.

Costco’s affordable Kirkland motor oil might be compelling the retailer to limit purchases to deter stockpiling and reselling.
