If you wondered about Patrick Mahomes’ performance following a severe knee injury nine months ago, rest assured. The Kansas City Chiefs’ star quarterback made an impressive comeback in the 2026 season opener against the Denver Broncos.
Mahomes scored on a 15-yard run, completing his team’s first offensive drive with a zigzagging dash into the end zone. This performance signals his readiness for the season ahead.
The 2026 season’s outcome for the Chiefs and Mahomes, considered by many as the top NFL quarterback, remains uncertain. However, his fearless approach in the first drive is a statement to the league. Even after enduring a tough injury, Mahomes demonstrated no fear of contact, proving his agility and determination.
Aged 30, Mahomes didn’t experience hits during organized team activities or training camp. He avoided preseason hits by not participating in those games. Instead, he faced in-game hits against the Broncos, overcoming any psychological hurdles.
Wearing a lightweight brace on his left knee, Mahomes stated it doesn’t affect his movement. He expects to shed it later this season. His injury to the ACL and LCL occurred on Dec. 14, 2025, against the Los Angeles Chargers, followed by surgery the next day in Dallas to repair the damage.
“Doctors urged surgery before inflammation set in,” Mahomes explained, highlighting a swift recovery plan that began immediately.
Mahomes committed to an intense rehabilitation regimen, spending seven hours daily on recovery, strength training, and team meetings. He chose to stay in Kansas City for rehab over offseason workouts in Texas, collaborating closely with the Chiefs’ medical staff.
Following progress through on-field workouts, OTAs, and training camp, Mahomes was cleared to play without restrictions in the season opener. He celebrated by driving his team into the end zone, proving his resilience and readiness.
