A Tragic Accident During Family Celebration

Steve Junker, a pastor from Elbow Lake, Minnesota, passed away after suffering a severe spinal cord injury while on a cruise in Italy for his son’s wedding. On August 16, Junker was aboard the Sun Princess when he experienced a tragic fall, leaving him face down and unresponsive in a pool, as noted by a GoFundMe page created by his family.

Response and Medical Efforts

Princess Cruises communicated its condolences, acknowledging Junker’s death to Fox News Digital. The cruise line stated that its personnel were notified on August 16 of a passenger requiring urgent medical aid. The ship’s medical team attended to Junker, who was then transferred ashore for further treatment. Junker’s family mentioned he suffered a spinal cord injury and almost drowned during the incident.

On that day, Junker was taken by an Italian Coast Guard boat to a Naples hospital and admitted to the intensive care unit, according to the fundraiser. On the following day, he underwent emergency spinal surgery which was successful, but his injury remained severe.

Junker’s family faced significant hurdles managing his medical care abroad and made efforts to arrange his transport back to a U.S. hospital. They discussed the logistical and financial difficulties of arranging medical transport to the United States.

On August 23, Junker was transferred to Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota for additional treatment.

Community Support and Loss

Pastor Steve was a wonderful person, loved by many, and had a great impact on many people through his faith.

The church highlighted Junker’s devotion to faith, sharing a tribute from his son Nathaniel who sang songs inspired by his father’s teachings.

Steve Junker previously worked as a pharmacist before entering ministry, leaving behind his wife, five children and their spouses, a grandchild, and numerous other family members. In remembrance, a mourner expressed condolences on Facebook, wishing comfort to those grieving his loss.
