Mark Englert’s 9/11 Experience: A Personal Reflection

Mark Englert, a business consultant from Connecticut, found himself close to the World Trade Center in Manhattan on September 11, 2001. That morning, after returning from a jog, he heard an explosion. Initially, he couldn’t comprehend the chaos ensuing outside his window. People were pointing skyward, and a tower was aflame. He learned it involved an airplane. Minutes later, a second plane hit the other tower.

Inside his sixth-floor apartment, Englert dropped to the floor, overwhelmed by the unfolding disaster. Soon after, he witnessed a grim reality from the rooftop; people leapt from the towers. Englert’s first account of the day came hours after the attacks in a call to a friend who worked as a reporter for the Hartford Courant.

In the 25 years since, Englert and his friend frequently met but avoided discussing the tragic event. Recently, when prompted by an editor, they revisited the conversation, uncovering haunting memories. Englert described the chaos in his building, recounting an elderly neighbor’s plight during the evacuation. Both tied wet towels around their faces to venture into the ash-filled streets toward safer areas.

They eventually encountered a police officer urging them to run as another tower collapsed. The two reached a flotilla of boats conducting a vast seaborne evacuation, rescuing around 500,000 people from Lower Manhattan. Once safely in New Jersey, Englert could finally inform his mother of his safety, yet struggled with words.

Trauma that sticks

Over the years, Englert returned to his apartment and lived in Battery Park City for 21 years, passing the 9/11 memorial regularly but never visiting it. Exposure to media about the event, even news mentions, remains distressing for him. Englert admits he hasn’t moved on; the memory persists, underscored by his reaction to low-flying jets.

Journalists who covered the attacks and their aftermath also reflect on how the day reshaped them and the media industry. Television served as a crucial source of guidance amid the chaos. Nowadays, commemoration events often lean towards historical lessons rather than firsthand recountings. Various media, including film, capture the emotional spectrum of 9/11.

Additional discussions cover diverse topics like California’s limited condo construction and recent environmental challenges, including rising sea levels due to El Niño. In other news, numerous legislative actions aim to enhance online safety for young people. Additionally, upcoming cultural and social events highlight local attractions and innovations.
