Controversy Surrounds Memorial for Charlie Kirk at UVU

A memorial marking one year since Charlie Kirk’s assassination has led to protests. Turning Point USA plans a ‘Freedom Built to Last Memorial’ on September 10 at Utah Valley University (UVU). The commemoration recalls Kirk’s fatal shooting during his speech at UVU last year.

Opposition has arisen, notably from Students for a Democratic Society (SDS). They, along with groups like Community Defense Club and The Black Menaces, plan protests outside the event venue. SDS criticized the campus closure and accused UVU of backing Kirk’s views in an Instagram post, stating, ‘UVU administration has closed campus that day, endorsing the views of Turning Point and Charlie Kirk.’

UVU, meanwhile, says the closure is to allow reflection and healing, asserting it does not endorse the event. UVU and Turning Point USA did not immediately respond to Newsweek’s requests for comment.

Kirk, a noted conservative activist, was involved in Turning Point USA, a group promoting conservatism on campuses. He was allied with President Trump and made provocative remarks on gun rights, immigration, and other topics. Tyler Robinson faces trial in Kirk’s killing, with the death penalty as a possible sentence after pleading not guilty.

SDS is collecting signatures for an open letter urging UVU to cancel Turning Point USA’s memorial event. The letter condemns the event, arguing it negatively impacts many students. It accuses UVU President Jon Anderson of aligning with TPUSA, described as ‘openly racist and antagonistic.’ SDS demands cancelling TPUSA’s campus event, stressing this undermines care for marginalized students.

SDS claims the letter has hundreds of signatures, including 483 students. Meanwhile, TPUSA describes the event as honoring Kirk’s legacy, calling for supporters to continue his mission. The event will feature speakers like Glenn Beck and Frank Turek, streamed on multiple platforms.

Regarding security, UCCU Center requires tickets and security checks, using metal detectors. Attendees should arrive early for parking and checks. Only small bags or inspected medical bags are allowed. Several items, including banners, drones, and cameras, are prohibited. Masks covering beyond the mouth and nose are banned.
