Upcoming Social Security Payments and COLA Projections for 2027

This week marks a significant period for millions of Americans awaiting their Social Security checks. Over 75 million people rely on Social Security benefits, which include retirement, spousal, survivor, or disability payments. These benefits are distributed monthly in a single lump sum, though not to everyone simultaneously. The Social Security Administration (SSA) follows a staggered payment schedule, with payment timing based on factors like the recipient’s birthdate and benefit type.

Current Payment Schedule

This week, payments are due for recipients with birthdates between the 1st and 10th of any month. These funds will be distributed on Wednesday, September 9. Recipients of retirement, spousal, and survivor benefits will receive their payments on this date. However, those who receive Supplemental Security Income (SSI) have already received their payments at the beginning of the month, specifically on Thursday, September 3.

“If you receive both SSI and another benefit type, your payment should have been issued earlier this month.”

Remaining Payment Dates in September

  • Wednesday, September 16: Payments for beneficiaries with birthdates between the 11th and 20th.
  • Wednesday, September 23: Payments for those with birthdates between the 21st and 31st.

Retirement Payment Variations

Social Security retirement payments fluctuate based on a worker’s lifetime earnings and their age at the onset of benefit collection. In 2026, the maximum retirement benefit is $4,152 monthly for those retiring at the full retirement age, having earned the maximum taxable amount throughout their career. Conversely, individuals starting benefits at age 62 receive a maximum of $2,969 monthly. Those delaying until age 70 can access up to $5,181 monthly. For those reaching age 62 in 2026, the full retirement age is 67.

Most beneficiaries, however, receive less than these maximum figures. By July 2026, the average retired worker saw $2,085.98 per month. When considering all beneficiaries, including retirees, survivors, and disabled individuals, the average payment was $1,940.08 monthly. Disabled workers averaged $1,635.27, while non-disabled widows and widowers averaged $1,932.74 monthly.

2027 Cost-of-Living Adjustment (COLA)

Soon, Social Security beneficiaries will have a clearer forecast of potential payment increases for 2027 upon the release of new inflation data. The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) plans to release the Consumer Price Index for August on September 11. This data will contribute to determining the following year’s Social Security cost-of-living adjustment (COLA). Estimates suggest potential increases greater than the previous year’s 2.8 percent increase. Projections place the 2027 COLA at 3.6 percent according to The Senior Citizens League, while AARP predicts a 3.5 percent rise.

This adjustment helps preserve Social Security and SSI benefits’ purchasing power against inflation. Instead of the general Consumer Price Index, the SSA uses the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers (CPI-W) for these calculations. The SSA compares the CPI-W average from July, August, and September to the prior year. If inflation is stagnant across this period, no COLA is applied. With July’s data already considered for the 2027 calculation, the upcoming August figures will further refine the projection. The final adjustment will be based on September’s data, scheduled for release on October 14, when the official 2027 COLA will be announced. Post-announcement, the increase will apply to December 2026’s Social Security payments, distributed starting January 2027.
