Trump Announces Nomination
President Donald Trump has put forward acting Navy Secretary Hung Cao for permanent leadership of the service. Trump describes the former Navy special operations officer as a ‘true warrior’ and urges the Senate to quickly confirm the nomination.
Cao’s Tenure as Acting Secretary
Cao has been serving as the acting secretary for four months, overseeing the Navy and Marine Corps. The Trump administration is keen on expanding U.S. shipbuilding and boosting maritime capabilities.
‘I am pleased to nominate a true warrior, Hung Cao, to become the next Secretary of the Navy,’ Trump wrote on Truth Social.
Calling Cao a patriot, Trump expressed confidence in his ability to ensure continued excellence for the Navy and Marine Corps.
Senate’s Role in Confirmation
Trump called on the Senate to act quickly regarding Cao’s nomination, emphasizing his successful tenure leading the department.
‘The Senate needs to confirm this warfighter, ASAP, so he can continue the fantastic work he has been doing over the past four months,’ Trump wrote.
In response, Cao expressed gratitude and stated his commitment to shipbuilding and homeland defense.
Background of Hung Cao
Cao, a retired Navy captain, served 25 years after graduating from the U.S. Naval Academy. His career included special operations in Iraq and Afghanistan.
In politics, Cao ran for Congress in 2022 and challenged Democratic Sen. Tim Kaine in 2024, losing both elections. Afterward, he joined the Trump administration as acting secretary earlier this year.
Confirmation Outcome
If confirmed by the Senate, Cao would officially lead the Department of the Navy, covering both Navy and Marine Corps operations.
The White House and U.S. Navy have yet to comment on the nomination.
