Unexpected Otter Encounter in Lake Tahoe Leaves Swimmer in Emergency Room

A swim instructor from Reno, Lynnette Bellin, faced a surprising encounter when attacked by an otter during her swim in Lake Tahoe. The incident lasted five minutes and resulted in a visit to the emergency room. Bellin, a seasoned swimmer in Lake Tahoe for 25 years, had never anticipated encountering otters in the lake.

The attack occurred around 30 minutes into her routine Sunday swim. Describing the ordeal, Bellin initially thought she was being tugged by another person due to the strength of the pull. She soon realized it was an otter, not a human. Despite her efforts to disengage, the otter grew more aggressive, biting and clawing at her.

Bellin attempted to throw the otter away but faced further attacks on her hands and face. Despite her screams for help, nearby trail users could not hear her. She managed to reach some rocks, but the otter followed closely.

Finally escaping by climbing onto a larger rock, Bellin found herself near the bike trail. Bloodied and barefoot, she walked back to her starting point. Her injuries required 38 stitches, and she received rabies shots at the emergency room.

Bellin expressed sorrow after the incident, stating that swimming in Lake Tahoe was her sanctuary, which felt disrupted by the attack.

This encounter serves as a reminder to remain vigilant while enjoying outdoor activities. Nature can sometimes lead to unexpected challenges.
