Challenges in Maternity Care Access in Arkansas

For many women in Arkansas, accessing routine prenatal care is a significant challenge. In some cases, it involves traveling an hour or more for appointments that are considered essential for a healthy pregnancy.

According to a March of Dimes report, Arkansas faces a pressing issue regarding maternity care. The report highlights that 33 out of the state’s 75 counties, equivalent to 44 percent, are classified as maternity care deserts. In these areas, there are no hospitals or birth centers offering obstetric services, nor are there obstetric clinicians available.

Despite Arkansas being recognized as the most pro-life state in America for six years by Americans United for Life, this report emphasizes the difficulties faced by expectant mothers in securing adequate healthcare services for prenatal care.
