California Man Arrested Near Capitol with Guillotine

A man from Southern California was arrested near the U.S. Capitol after authorities found a guillotine in his truck. The arrest occurred on Tuesday, as reported by United States Capitol Police (USCP).

Officers observed an illegally parked pickup truck along the 100 block of East Capitol Street, adjacent to the Capitol grounds and close to the U.S. Supreme Court. At the time, both Congress and the High Court were on summer recess. The individual, identified as 35-year-old Philan-Tam-Duy Le, had driven more than 2,500 miles from Julian, a small town in San Diego County, California, to Washington, D.C. Police are investigating the reasons behind his journey.

In a press release, officials mentioned, “USCP investigators are reviewing the suspect’s background to determine why he traveled to Washington, D.C.”

Le faces charges of carrying a dangerous weapon. Released photos show the guillotine fully assembled and standing upright in the truck bed, with its frame extending several feet above the vehicle, reaching into the nearby tree line. Newsweek has contacted Capitol Police for further information, such as confirming whether the guillotine was transported over the entire cross-country trip.

This incident adds to a series of weapons-related events addressed by Capitol Police this year. Last month, officers detained Wendell J. Royster, a 67-year-old from Columbia, Mississippi, who arrived at a Capitol barricade with a firearm and asked for directions to the Supreme Court.

In a separate February case, federal prosecutors charged an 18-year-old from Georgia after he approached the Capitol with a loaded shotgun while wearing tactical gear. Authorities arrested him on Capitol grounds; they reported recovering a shotgun with eight rounds and additional ammunition, as stated by the Justice Department. The suspect intended to speak with a member of Congress, even though Congress was not in session at the time. This event transpired a week before President Donald Trump’s State of the Union address.
