A Utah public library has confirmed the inclusion of an LGBTQ-themed children’s book in its collection, emphasizing accessibility for young readers. Provo City Library’s director of library services, Carla Z. Gordon, stated that the book Pride Is Love is part of their collection but is not on display. These children’s books are strategically placed to be central and easily accessible within the library, reinforcing the library’s commitment to serving its ‘smallest patrons’ efficiently.
In a recent statement to Fox News Digital, Gordon clarified that these books reside in bins containing over 2,500 other board books. While the books, including Pride Is Love, are easily accessible, they are not presented as part of any specific display. The Cougar Chronicle, a conservative outlet, recently highlighted Pride Is Love as part of a critique, asserting that the library promoted progressive ideologies through its children’s section. The critique includes examples of other LGBTQ-themed titles such as Pride Puppy!, It’s a They!, and My Two Dads and Me.
“I can confirm that the library does own a copy of
Pride Is Lovealong with the other small board books,” stated Gordon.
The library provides resources on its website to assist parents in selecting materials that align with their family values. The library’s Selection Policy seeks to make educational and informational materials readily available. This policy ensures a balanced collection that accommodates different perspectives, including those on gender, sexuality, and race.
Gordon addressed common concerns about the library’s materials, noting the established process for reviewing complaints, which involves examining the pertinent books and deciding whether to retain, relocate, or remove them.
Senator Mike Lee expressed his concerns on social media, referencing the ongoing debate about the library’s book selection.
