Dallas Cowboys Revamp Defense, Sam Williams Faces Uncertainty

The Dallas Cowboys have been focused on enhancing their defense, especially in the role of pass-rusher, during the offseason. The team has made significant moves, including acquiring Pro Bowler Rashan Gary through a trade and signing former All-Pro Von Miller. Additionally, the Cowboys have drafted Malachi Lawrence and Jaishawn Barham, leading to potential changes in their existing defensive lineup.

Gary Davenport of Bleacher Report has highlighted that Sam Williams might face job insecurity amid these changes. He anticipates Williams could be a candidate for release as the Cowboys trim their roster. Davenport noted Williams once showed promise as a rising edge-rusher for the team. However, given the presence of Rashan Gary, Donovan Ezeiruaku, rookie Malachi Lawrence, and newly signed Von Miller, spots on the 53-man roster may be limited.

The competition appears intense, possibly leaving only one or two openings for Williams, Marist Liufau, and James Houston. Liufau, known for his special teams contribution, may have an edge, leaving Williams’ future uncertain with the Cowboys, despite his potential value if released.

Throughout his three seasons with the Cowboys, Williams has recorded 85 tackles, 9.5 sacks, four fumble recoveries, and three forced fumbles. In 2024, Williams missed the entire season due to an ACL tear during preseason. While he appeared in all 17 games in the subsequent season, his impact was minimal, with only one sack recorded.

Williams acknowledges the competitive pressure but embraces the challenge wholeheartedly. He stated that he has taken all reports and criticisms seriously, using them as motivation for self-improvement. Williams has made efforts to focus on his shortcomings, writing reminders on his mirror as a daily prompt for personal growth.

“I took all the reports, all the negative comments, everything, and I took it in and I looked at myself in the mirror because you can’t get better unless you know what you’re doing wrong,” Williams expressed. “So, everything that I’ve seen, I try to fix. Like even in my room, it’s written on the mirror.”

Williams remains dedicated, committing to hard work and hoping to let his performance speak for itself, as he aims to secure his place in the team amid fierce competition.
