A 17-year-old boy in Utah faces allegations of murdering his mother and 8-year-old half-brother. Law enforcement shared that a masked individual, whose physique matched the suspect, appeared on surveillance cameras in the area following a late-night shooting.
Saratoga Springs Police apprehended the teenager on August 14 after a detailed 17-month investigation. This process included executing numerous search warrants, evaluating extensive forensic evidence, and collecting hundreds of evidence pieces. The Utah County Attorney’s Office filed charges against him. The charges include two counts of first-degree murder.
Prosecutors later filed aggravated murder and obstruction of justice charges in juvenile court, as indicated by documents accessed by KSL. The state hopes to shift the proceedings to adult district court. Due to his juvenile status, authorities have not released the teen’s identity.
“The charging documents mention gunshot residue found on various clothing items, and DNA evidence links the teen to the crime scene,” according to the report.
Police responded to a call at the Willowbrook Lane home on March 28, 2025, where they found Jessica Orton Lyman, 44, and Eli Painter, 8, both with fatal gunshot wounds. Despite emergency efforts to save them, they succumbed to their injuries. The discovery occurred as Lyman’s teenage daughter returned the next morning.
Nearby surveillance footage reportedly recorded an argument the night before. Voices believed to belong to the victims and the teen filled the recording, with gunshots following shortly after. Another camera later captured a masked figure wandering the neighborhood around 2:34 a.m. and 2:59 a.m., resembling the teen in height and build.
Authorities conducted thorough searches, including diving teams scouring the Jordan River, yet primarily uncovered BB guns in the teen’s room. Additional samples from various clothing items and the victim’s clothing revealed gunshot residue, increasing suspicion.
The investigation involved processing an extensive amount of evidence, employing multiple search warrants, and poring over video materials. Throughout this period, detectives collaborated with the FBI, Utah State Crime Laboratory, and additional law enforcement agencies.
“Our detectives, based on comprehensive investigative work over the last 17 months, have identified a suspect and determined probable cause for an arrest,” Saratoga Springs Police Chief Andrew Burton remarked.
The case continues as investigators conduct further interviews and gather additional data. Lyman and Eli’s family publicly expressed their grief and urged anyone with information to assist authorities.
The family issued a statement thanking the agencies involved while insisting on full accountability for those responsible. Jason Painter, a relative, commemorated Jessica as a dedicated mother and Eli as a joyful child whose presence enriched others’ lives.
The family concluded by emphasizing their commitment to honoring Jessica and Eli’s legacy, beyond the circumstances of their deaths.
