Emergency Landing in Boca Raton: A small plane plunged into the ocean just off a Boca Raton beach, leading to a dramatic rescue. A lifeguard swiftly entered the water, assisting the pilot back to shore. According to the police, the pilot was the sole occupant of the single-engine aircraft, and no injuries were reported.
Young Pilot’s Skillful Maneuver: Faith Tenkley, a 23-year-old pilot from Florida, successfully executed a water landing in the Atlantic Ocean. Her four years of experience proved vital as she maneuvered her family’s twin-engine Piper around buildings, carefully avoiding paddleboarders, before locating an open stretch of water next to the beach.
Swift Rescue Effort: The water landing, performed at about 9:40 a.m. local time, was quickly followed by a rescue operation. A lifeguard reached Tenkley within a minute of the aircraft’s descent near 250 South Ocean Blvd. A Boca Raton Ocean Rescue fireboat followed shortly after. Witnesses observed the tail of the plane protruding from the ocean, captured in a video by a beachgoer.
Clearing Up Misinformation: Tenkley, who has declined most media interviews but spoke to Gulf Coast News’ Peter Busch, clarified misinformation that circulated online. Busch noted on Facebook that Faith aimed to dispel rumors suggesting a male pilot was rescued by a female surfer, contrary to the actual events.
Mechanical Issues and Precautionary Hospital Visit: Tenkley departed from Page Field in Fort Myers and was en route to Bimini, Bahamas. Mechanical issues surfaced about 15 miles west of Boca Raton. Initially planning to divert to Boca Raton Airport, a landing gear malfunction and engine failure influenced her decision to ditch the aircraft in the ocean, avoiding a hazardous runway landing.
Witness Accounts: Beachgoer Maria Marks expressed surprise upon observing the plane’s descent, while another witness, Alexis Arizzi, described the landing as slow and delicate. Tenkley’s adept handling ensured the aircraft remained intact during the emergency landing.
