Progressive Candidates Face Challenges in Illinois Primaries

Far-left candidates in the Illinois Democratic primaries have experienced significant setbacks. These contenders, some endorsed by high-profile figures like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and “The Squad,” encountered tough competition. Fox News contributor Joe Concha noted the victories of moderate candidates such as Mayor Daniel Biss and former Congresswoman Melissa Bean in House districts 09, 08, and 02.

Aisha Wahab, a progressive state senator and assistant majority leader, emerged victorious against Melissa Hernandez in a special election. The contest was to replace Rep. Eric Swalwell, whose conduct led to his removal. Wahab’s win reflected the divide in the Democratic Party between its progressive and establishment factions. She received endorsements from influential figures like California Attorney General Rob Bonta and Lt. Gov. Eleni Kounalakis, while Hernandez garnered support from super PACs and local officials.

Initially, progressive Democrats started strong with significant victories in regions such as New York and Pennsylvania. However, they have failed to meet expectations in key races like Michigan’s Senate and Wisconsin’s gubernatorial contests.

Rep. Eric Swalwell expressed his views during an anti-Trump and Elon Musk rally in Washington, D.C., April 2025.

In California, “jungle primaries” allow the top two candidates, irrespective of party, to advance to the general election. Wahab and Hernandez, both Democrats, led the primary, excluding Republicans from a district that favored Harris in 2024.

Despite Wahab’s win being temporary, incumbents generally have an edge in future elections. The general election will occur under new district boundaries as California implements its updated congressional map.

Some Democrats argue that recent setbacks for progressive candidates indicate a halt to socialist advancements within the party. Others cite the enduring popularity of socialist policies among young voters as a counterpoint.

Progressive activists interrupted pro-Israel Democrat Haley Stevens at a Michigan convention, highlighting the intra-party tension.

During her campaign, Hernandez focused on ethical issues, accusing Wahab of misconduct in Sacramento. Conversely, Wahab questioned Hernandez’s progressive credentials, particularly her association with pro-Israel finances.

Hernandez alleged Wahab bypassed campaign finance rules by rerouting $60,000 to fund congressional ads. Wahab countered with accusations against Hernandez, regarding her ties to pro-Israel donors and related super PACs.

The Israeli-Palestinian conflict has become a notable issue within the Democratic Party’s internal debates, as progressives aim to challenge those Democrats supporting Israel.
