Bronx Man Charged with Hate Crimes for Synagogue Disruption

A man from the Bronx is facing federal hate crime charges after a violent incident at a synagogue in Midtown Manhattan. Larry Montes, 46, explicitly admitted during a recorded interview that his actions were racially and religiously motivated, according to federal prosecutors.

In the interview following his arrest, Montes expressed antisemitic sentiments, stating, “F— the Jews… It’s racial,” and refused to associate with synagogues either locally or in Israel. The Justice Department charged Montes with two counts of hate crimes and one count of destruction of religious property causing bodily injury. He could face up to 30 years in prison if convicted.

During a recent Shabbat service at the Central Synagogue, attended by 375 people, Montes disrupted the gathering. Prosecutors allege he assaulted attendees and shouted obscenities. Witnesses reported him standing and shouting before damaging ceremonial candlesticks. When the head of security attempted to intervene, Montes used foul language and exhibited violence.

Authorities say Montes punched a female congregant and attacked a security guard who was trying to restrain him. Reports indicate Montes used a racial slur towards the Black guard, spit in his face, and assaulted his eye socket.

Aside from federal charges, Montes also faces state charges for the incident. New York City Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch confirmed the assailed woman and security guard are recovering well.

Mayor Zohran Mamdani voiced his dismay at the incident, acknowledging the impact such violence has on victims and the wider Jewish community. He emphasized the importance of allowing all residents to practice their faith without fear.

Montes remains in custody while the legal process continues.
