Hutchinson’s Rally in Toronto
Canadian powerlifting champion April Hutchinson led a significant rally in support of Sophie Cunningham on Tuesday night in Toronto. This event marked the first Cunningham rally outside the United States. Supporters gathered outside Scotiabank Arena prior to the Indiana Fever’s game against the Toronto Tempo, displaying unity by wearing XX-XY Athletics T-shirts.
Hutchinson explained to Fox News Digital that the atmosphere was supportive, with only a small group of approximately five individuals wearing pro-transgender slogans exchanging words with Cunningham supporters. Hutchinson remarked, “Only about five were wearing ‘protect trans kids’ and ‘protect the dolls’ T-shirts, [they] walked by and said that our signs were disrespectful.”
Toronto Police Involvement
The rally’s safety was ensured with support from local authorities. “The Toronto police contacted me this morning and wanted details about the rally to ensure our safety,” Hutchinson mentioned.
Despite this assurance, a disagreement arose between the Cunningham supporters and local police. A large mobile billboard, featuring Cunningham and supportive messages about fairness in women’s sports, prompted police action. The police issued tickets due to the billboard by Rebel News, citing violations of Toronto Municipal By-law regarding animated and illuminated displays.
Rebel News stated they have engaged legal representation to contest these charges. The Toronto Police Department acknowledged the situation but opted not to provide any further comments, as the charges are now before the courts.
Cunningham’s Performance and Reception
Inside the arena, Sophie Cunningham performed well, making all her three-point shots and earning a total of 13 points. Despite her success, many fans expressed their displeasure, booing Cunningham due to her stance on protecting women’s sports.
Cunningham later praised the audience, expressing her admiration for the lively and passionate environment. “I want to shout out the Tempo crowd, and the city, I think we had so much fun, it’s my first time being in Canada… but the crowd was absolutely amazing, and I think that’s what sports is all about,” she stated.
Upcoming Events
The Cunningham rallies are set to continue. The Fever’s next games will feature additional “Sophie Nights”, including a game against the Dallas Wings and another in New York facing the Liberty.
