Trump’s Approval Ratings Decline Among Millennials

President Donald Trump’s approval rating among millennials has decreased, according to a recent Economist/YouGov poll. The poll, conducted from August 14 to August 17, shows that only 26 percent of individuals aged 30 to 44, categorized as millennials, approve of Trump’s performance as president. This figure has fallen from 29 percent the previous week and continues a five-week trend of declining or stagnant support among this demographic.

Overall, Trump’s approval rating stands at 35 percent, with 61 percent disapproving. The poll included 1,611 U.S. adults and bears a margin of error of 3.4 percent. White House Spokeswoman Olivia Wales commented via email, highlighting achievements such as tax cuts and reductions in prescription drug prices, while attributing ongoing declines to prior policies by Joe Biden.

A White House official noted record lows in violent crime and a stopping of migrant releases at the border. FBI data supports the 9 percent reduction in violent crime for 2025, and there has been a 3.1 percent decrease in prescription drug prices in July, the largest annual drop in decades.

Why Millennial Votes Matter

Millennials, those born from 1981 to 1996, have now become the largest age demographic, surpassing baby boomers. This shift underscores the significance of their votes. In the 2024 campaign, both Trump and former Vice President Kamala Harris focused on engaging millennials through digital media, a critical component of their strategies.

Key Insights

The Economist/YouGov poll reveals that younger Americans hold a particularly negative view of Trump’s presidency. Only 30 percent of voters aged 18 to 29 approve of his performance, while 67 percent disapprove. For those aged 30 to 44, approval stands at 26 percent, with a disapproval rate of 70 percent.

Approval in areas such as foreign policy and tariffs is also low. Among those aged 18 to 29, 24 and 25 percent approve of Trump’s handling of these issues, respectively. Millennials, on the other hand, show 21 percent approval in foreign policy and 19 percent in handling tariffs. The president last saw such low approval ratings from millennials in a June poll.

As Trump approaches the 2026 midterm elections, his overall approval nears or reaches its lowest point. A YouGov poll earlier recorded a 33 percent approval rate for Trump, with a 62 percent disapproval, marking his highest recorded disapproval. Although there is a slight improvement to 35 percent approval, the decline among younger voters remains significant.

Additional Polling Insights

An Echelon Insights poll indicates Trump’s overall approval at 40 percent, with a 59 percent disapproval. Among 18-34-year-olds, approval is at 28 percent, and disapproval is at 72 percent. The poll surveyed 1,002 registered voters from August 13-17, with a margin of error of 3.4 percent.

In comparison, a Reuters/Ipsos poll shows Trump’s overall approval at 33 percent, with a 64 percent disapproval rate. This survey interviewed 1,166 U.S. adults from August 14-17, 2026, and has a 3 percent margin of error.
