Fedorov Advocates for Democratic Processes
On Tuesday, Ukraine’s former defense minister, Mykhailo Fedorov, urged the nation to hold an election. This proposition emerges despite the ongoing war with Russia, marking a significant challenge to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s authority since the conflict began.
Zelenskyy enacted martial law to prevent elections after Russian forces invaded in February 2022. In a YouTube video, Fedorov stated, “Democracy cannot be held hostage by Russia.” He advocated for a “legal, safe, and realistic mechanism” to resume Ukraine’s democratic process during the war.
Fedorov emphasized, “We are fighting because we want to remain a free European state.” Before his dismissal in July, Fedorov was instrumental in Ukraine’s strategic shift towards utilizing drones and robots to combat Russian forces.
Dismissal and Public Reaction
Fired by Zelenskyy due to a conflict with General Oleksandr Syrskyi, Fedorov’s removal led to nationwide protests. Thousands criticized the decision, recognizing Fedorov for his role in enhancing Ukraine’s military capabilities and strategy. He was acknowledged for significantly boosting Ukraine’s domestic weaponry and increasing offenses into Russia.
Public Support and Future Plans
In an exclusive CBS News interview, Fedorov described the protests as evidence of public support for democracy. He confirmed the complexity of organizing a vote during war but argued, “Complexity does not mean impossibility.” The challenge includes enabling soldiers, front-line residents, and displaced Ukrainians to participate in voting.
Fedorov did not disclose any personal electoral intentions but expressed willingness to return as defense minister. His statements suggest a persistent commitment to nurturing Ukraine’s democratic future.
