Recent photos from Newsweek reveal apparent damage to the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool amid ongoing renovation work spearheaded during President Donald Trump’s administration. The images illustrate areas where the pool’s bottom seems peeled and patched, highlighting construction challenges in the project.
Federal prosecutors recently clarified that defects in the pool’s installation were the main cause of damage, not vandalism, as previously speculated. This clarification followed a high-profile political dispute. The Reflecting Pool became controversial when the Trump administration hurried its reopening in time for the July Fourth celebrations. While Trump insists that vandalism played a role, he has also acknowledged contractor errors during the refurbishment.
Court documents and federal prosecutor statements indicate that the pool’s peeling liner and related issues originated from flawed installation by contractors. As a result, criminal charges against former Olympian David Hearn, accused of damaging the pool, have been dropped. In response to comments, the White House directed inquiries to the National Park Service, which Newsweek contacted for further statements.
The Renovation Project
Trump’s aim with the renovation was to enhance the Reflecting Pool’s cleanliness and appeal. The plan included applying a blue hue to the pool’s base, branded as “American flag blue,” to combat recurring algae issues. However, shortly after project completion, algae resurfaced, turning the pool water green. Officials deployed hydrogen peroxide and nanobubble ozone technology to manage the algae and clean the pool floor.
Amid these challenges, Trump alleged that vandals had cut a notable gash in the pool’s new blue liner. This event fueled the renovation debate, with critics suggesting Trump himself damaged the liner by driving over the freshly completed area in May. The project’s expenses have exceeded initial estimates, growing to over $15 million, according to reports.
Newsweek Photos Depicting Project Progress
Taken on Tuesday, Newsweek’s photographs provide a fresh perspective on the project as repairs proceed. Persistent issues include extensive algae growth and sections of the pool’s blue coating detaching from surfaces. This peeling occurred mere days post-renovation, raising doubts about installation quality. Though some, including Trump, have attributed the damage to vandalism, federal statements attribute it to incorrect installation. Repair efforts are continuous amid scrutiny over cost and longevity.
On Tuesday, peeling was evident through Newsweek photos, showing construction crews active on site. Additionally, attention has focused on areas of dead grass on the National Mall near Trump’s Fourth of July event venue. While vandalism has been suggested as a factor, no specific cause for the dead grass has been officially declared. The discolored patches remained visible as of Tuesday.
Additional Renovation Efforts
Trump also highlighted another renovation in Washington, D.C., concerning the restoration of the Thomas Jefferson Columns at the White House. In a Truth Social post, he praised the work, adding an image of the freshly painted columns. In a separate post, Trump boasted of broader D.C. beautification efforts, including projects such as fixing lights, rehabbing benches, and cleaning statues.
Future of the Reflecting Pool
As repairs and adjustments persist, the timeline for the Reflecting Pool’s reopening remains uncertain. However, Trump stated on Truth Social that it would “reopen shortly.” The project’s success in delivering desired enhancements depends on resolving existing complications from the costly renovations.
