Brennon Zeng has often been the quiet member of Batavia’s impressive group of senior receivers, but his name is coming into the limelight this season. Coaches have taken note. The 6-foot-3, 190-pound senior recently committed to Northern Illinois University and became the third of Batavia’s senior receivers to earn a Division I scholarship. He joins fellow senior talents Darin Ashiru, who committed to Western Michigan, and Thomas Prescott, headed to Wyoming.
Batavia’s offensive coordinator, Sean Anderson, shares his insight: “Brennon has worked incredibly hard and is the most underrated among them,” Anderson says. “It’s good to see him getting recognized. He attends camps and performs exceptionally. He may not speak much, but he’s a consistent performer.” Zeng, along with Ashiru and Prescott, forms a key part of a skilled group for the Bulldogs, ranked second in the Beacon-News/Courier-News preseason standings.
The trio will receive throws from senior quarterback Michael Vander Luitgaren, a three-year starter who guided the Bulldogs to the Class 7A state semifinals with a 10-3 record last season. Vander Luitgaren himself is a sought-after talent, choosing Wyoming earlier this year. Anderson praises his quarterback’s capability: “Mike knows how to distribute to them effectively,” he says. Last season, Vander Luitgaren threw for 2,708 yards and scored 31 touchdowns, completing passes to Zeng and other key players.
Zeng, influenced by his father Brian, who played running back and receiver in high school, made his varsity debut last season against his father’s alma mater, Glenbard West. “That game was a wake-up call,” Zeng recalls. “The team was physical. I was adjusting, getting into my role. This year is a bigger challenge.” Since then, Zeng has grown stronger, adding nearly 20 pounds of muscle, which boosted his recruitment prospects.
Head Coach Dennis Piron, nearing the end of a longstanding tenure, highlights the transformation: “He was quiet, just doing his thing,” Piron notes. Zeng refers to a pivotal moment at North Central College camp that raised his visibility: “I clocked a solid 40-yard dash there,” Zeng says. “NIU noticed and offered me a spot.” Despite prioritizing football over his senior baseball season, Zeng remains committed academically, maintaining a 4.91 GPA.
“It was tough choosing football over my senior baseball season,” Zeng states. “But football is where my focus is.”
The season calls for high expectations. Vander Luitgaren aims to score 40 points per game and hopes to help Coach Piron secure a third state championship title. “We have confidence and aim high,” Zeng confirms. “The title remains our main objective.” Anderson views Zeng as reliable: “I’ll rely on Brennon for possession throws—his ability to make contested catches is vital,” Anderson states. “His hands are reliable; he excels at catching away from his body.”
Brennon Zeng’s performance continues to be noteworthy. Recently, he scored a touchdown against Glenbard West in Batavia. The team’s offensive leaders include standout contributors like senior quarterback Michael Vander Luitgaren, wide receiver Darin Ashiru, and tight end Thomas Prescott. Defensive contributions from Jack Brown and Luke Gardner stand out, while Charlie Rosengren offers potential as an X-factor running back.
