In a recent move, LSU head coach Lane Kiffin left Ole Miss to pursue a stronger chance at building a championship dynasty in Baton Rouge. During a discussion with reporters on Monday, Kiffin highlighted money as a substantial motivator for his players. Unlike previous generations who mainly received scholarships, today’s athletes are aware that their performance on the field influences potential earnings.
“We’ve evolved in that, in how we talk,” Kiffin explained through a transcription from On3. “They make a lot of money, a lot of them now. So, to me, there’s a little bit of a difference in there. If you get what part of your motivation was, are you still motivated? We work through that in the way that we talk to them, the things that we point to.”
Kiffin acknowledged that while issues arise with players earning substantial amounts, there are positive aspects too. Athletes perceive their role more as a substantial job rather than a mere scholarship commitment. He noted this change in perspective fuels a serious attitude toward their performance on the field. Players now understand that failing to meet expectations could lead to being dropped from the team, affecting their financial future.
“I think they do take it more serious that way and realize, ‘Hey, if I don’t play well, I’m probably not going to make that next year. And if I play well, I’m going to make more vs. I just have the same scholarship.’ Kind of just how a lot of humans work, if you think about it,” Kiffin mentioned.
Some college football enthusiasts express concern that players might lose motivation after receiving their first significant paycheck. However, players are aware that further success on the field can lead to even greater rewards.
