Kushner Warns Hamas on Disarmament Amid Gaza Peace Talks

U.S. special envoy Jared Kushner issued a warning to Hamas on Monday. He stated that the terrorist group must follow through with its commitment to disarm in Gaza. If not, an Israeli military action will occur to address the issue.

Kushner discussed recent diplomatic meetings in Egypt and Israel. These meetings focused on pushing President Donald Trump’s plan for peace in Gaza. This comes as tensions and fighting between Israel and Hamas continue.

Despite an October ceasefire, Israel has conducted air strikes and claimed more territory in Gaza. Meanwhile, Hamas remains resistant to disarming, according to reports from Reuters.

High-Stakes Diplomatic Meetings

In Cairo, Kushner met with Hamas and the National Committee. This body represents the new Palestinian government intended to take control.

Kushner remarked that Hamas confirmed its agreement with Trump’s 20-point peace initiative. They also agreed to a 15-point roadmap worked on over four months, which includes disarming.

Kushner explained that while progress seems promising, action will need to back their promises. If Hamas fails to act, Israel could have increased support from the U.S. and allies to take military action.

This was only Kushner’s second recognized meeting with Hamas. He noted that although the meeting was cordial, trusting a group with a violent history poses challenges.

U.S.-Led Peace Proposal Details

The peace proposal involves a phased ceasefire, the disarmament of Gaza, withdrawal of Israeli troops, Palestinian governance, and international reconstruction efforts.

During his visit to Jerusalem and Tel Aviv, Kushner met Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Discussions centered on the timing of the peace plan’s implementation.

Israel demands complete disarmament before more withdrawals or reconstruction efforts. Conversely, Hamas insists that withdrawal and disarmament occur simultaneously.

Challenges and Optimism

Kushner expressed hope after a productive session with Israeli leaders. Misunderstandings and misinformation were addressed.

Reconstruction in Gaza, according to Kushner, remains contingent on Hamas’ disarmament.

“We will not allow Gaza to be rebuilt until demilitarization occurs,” Kushner stated. He emphasized Israel’s right to defend against immediate threats.

Kushner outlined the urgency of disarmament. Progress could be seen within 30 days, with significant efforts in replacing weapons and destroying tunnels occurring in the following 60 to 90 days.

Continuing Conflict and Regional Sentiment

The ongoing conflict, sparked by a terrorist attack by Hamas on October 7, 2023, has lasted nearly three years, with substantial casualties and hostages involved.

“Israel has a strong desire to live in peace,” Kushner said.

He noted the emotional toll the conflict has taken on both Israel and the broader region.

Kushner emphasized that the region is weary of prolonged conflict and is eager for change, though trust remains a substantial obstacle.

Kushner voiced confidence in President Trump’s capabilities of achieving a lasting peace agreement.

“We see a lot of positive indications, and President Trump has achieved significant agreements before in the Middle East,” Kushner remarked.
