Ukrainians, over four years into Russia’s extensive invasion, are finding moments of normality in unexpected places. For many, one such place is a local fast-food chain.
Zlatoslava Supruniuk, aged 36, stands by a McDonald’s in Kyiv, Ukraine, as of July 10. Supruniuk recalls visiting Ukraine’s first McDonald’s when it opened its doors in 1997.
McDonald’s serves a dual purpose in Ukraine. It is both a common fast-food choice and a symbol of everyday life amid ongoing conflict. The branch in Kyiv, subject to numerous bombing attempts, stands resilient in the Lukianivka neighborhood.
Strategically located near an old Soviet weapons factory, the area has been repeatedly attacked since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine began over four and a half years ago.
