Supreme Court Rejects Trump’s Appeal in Carroll Case

The Supreme Court has declined to dismiss a jury’s decision that awarded $5 million to writer E. Jean Carroll. The jury found that former President Donald Trump sexually abused Carroll in a 1990s incident at a New York department store and later defamed her. Trump’s legal team sought the court’s intervention to overturn the ruling, but the justices rejected their appeal along with several others.

Trump complied with the payment of the $5 million judgment following the court’s initial refusal to take up his case in June. Both Trump and the Justice Department continue to challenge another Carroll verdict, which amounts to $83 million. They claim presidential immunity regarding Trump’s 2019 comments about Carroll when he served as President. No decision from the Supreme Court has been made about this appeal yet.

Carroll, well-known for her advice column and television appearances, testified that an encounter with Trump in the 1990s transformed into an unprovoked attack at Bergdorf Goodman, a luxury store near Trump Tower in Manhattan. The jury determined that Trump defamed Carroll by dismissing her claim in 2022. Trump has consistently denied any misconduct.

In cases of sexual assault allegations, The Associated Press generally refrains from naming individuals unless they publicly identify themselves, as Carroll has done.
