Potential Aaron Donald Comeback Concerns NFC West Quarterbacks

The possibility of Aaron Donald returning to the Los Angeles Rams is causing concern among NFC West quarterbacks including San Francisco’s Brock Purdy, Seattle’s Sam Darnold, and Arizona’s Jacoby Brissett. Although Donald retired two years ago, his interest in making a comeback has been sparked by the Rams acquiring the reigning sack leader, Myles Garrett, earlier this offseason.

As speculation about Donald’s return mounts, quarterbacks across the NFC are apprehensive about facing both him and Garrett. On the podcast “Green Light With Chris Long,” Detroit Lions quarterback Jared Goff, who played with Donald while with the Rams, expressed his unease about the potential matchup in the playoffs.

“How many snaps a game you think he gives the Rams this year if he comes back?” Long asked Goff.

“Hopefully zero,” Goff quipped. “In that playoff game, we beat [the Rams] and I’m like, ‘We did it; Aaron’s done. I don’t have to see him ever again.’ And he’s like, ‘Hold on, I might come back.’ So, we’ll see. If he comes back, I’m sure he’ll help them a lot. We might see them in the playoffs, and I can’t say enough good things about him.”

Goff and Donald shared the field in Los Angeles from 2016 to 2020, during which they led the team to three playoff appearances and one Super Bowl. Since Goff’s trade to Detroit in 2021, he holds a 1-1 record against his former team. Notably, Goff’s single win against the Rams came in a narrow 24-23 playoff victory in 2023, marking Donald’s last game before retirement.
