Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese delivered an electrifying WNBA match at State Farm Arena on Sunday evening. Clark’s performance was crucial in Indiana Fever’s 95-91 victory over the Atlanta Dream.
Clark scored 26 points, executed two vital free throws in overtime, and secured the game-winning rebound. Her efforts helped the Fever claim victory against Reese and the Dream.
It was truly a team triumph for the Fever. Clark and Reese stood out, especially Reese’s missed layup towards the end of regulation, which pushed the game into overtime.
The Fever faced challenges but prevailed. Indiana was trailing by eight points after Atlanta managed a 72-64 lead by scoring 28 points in the third quarter. Despite this, Indiana’s defense turned the tide, restricting Atlanta to nine points in the fourth quarter and outscoring them 17-9, forcing the game into overtime.
The Dream’s fourth-quarter scoring was the lowest they’ve seen this season, yet they nearly clinched the win. In the game’s final seconds with an 81-81 tie, Rhyne Howard missed a three-pointer with 5.5 seconds left. Reese secured the rebound but failed to score on her layup attempt. As time expired, Naz Hillmon attempted a desperate shot, which also failed, leading the game into overtime.
In overtime, Reese scored right away following a missed shot by a teammate. Indiana responded with eight consecutive points. Kelsey Mitchell’s layup with 13.6 seconds left extended Indiana’s lead to 93-88, marking her 19th consecutive 20-point game.
The game’s conclusion was intense. A controversial foul call against Clark with 10 seconds remaining allowed Howard a chance at three free throws. Though ESPN broadcasters speculated the call might be overturned, officials upheld the decision. Howard converted all three free throws, narrowing Indiana’s lead to 93-91.
The Dream then fouled Clark. She calmly converted both free throws, effectively securing Indiana’s victory. The Dream missed their final shot attempt and Clark captured the rebound, tossing the ball across the court to run down the clock successfully.
Clark ended with 26 points and nine assists, though she took 20 shots and had five turnovers. Yet, her performance was critical when Indiana needed it, from the free-throw line to rebounding.
Mitchell scored 20 points from 9-for-22 shooting, while Makayla Timpson excelled with 20 points, including six in overtime. Aliyah Boston contributed 18 points, 14 rebounds, four assists, five steals, and three blocks.
Sophie Cunningham made a pivotal play, scoring three points on an and-1 play that gave Indiana the lead late in the fourth quarter.
Reese’s statistics were impressive with 15 points, 14 rebounds, and six assists, but she struggled with 5-for-16 shooting, four turnovers, and five fouls. Allisha Gray led Atlanta with 32 points, while Howard added 17.
Although Atlanta was nearly flawless from the free-throw line, completing 25-of-26 attempts, Indiana’s tactical defense and Clark’s crucial free throws ensured their victory.
Clark and Reese have a history of clutch performances. Sunday’s game showcased early momentum shifts, a decisive defensive effort, a last-second missed opportunity, dramatic overtime, and Clark’s pivotal free throws.
