Kelly Clarkson recently shared that she won’t be introducing her children to a particular chapter of her early career. During her last concert in Las Vegas, the 44-year-old singer mentioned that she has banned her daughter River Rose, aged 12, and son Remington, aged 10, from watching her 2003 musical comedy film, From Justin to Kelly.
At the concert, Clarkson humorously referred to the film as ‘Oscar-worthy’ but quickly clarified that she participated due to being ‘contractually obligated’. She added, ‘Read the fine print. I didn’t know that winning meant you had to do a movie. Not everyone wants to be Meryl Streep; some of us just enjoy watching her.’ Clarkson explained that although she didn’t want to take the role, her success in American Idol made it obligatory.
The film, starring American Idol winner Clarkson and runner-up Justin Guarini, follows two young people who meet and fall in love during spring break. Clarkson openly criticized the movie, describing it bluntly as ‘s—‘. Despite a fan’s approval of the film at her concert, Clarkson maintained her critical stance.
She also revealed that she doesn’t plan for her children to watch the film anytime soon. ‘My kids, I’ve banned them from watching,’ Clarkson confirmed. However, she acknowledged that the film wasn’t entirely a negative experience, mentioning, ‘The music part was fun. You have to find the positive, you know? Turn those lemons into lemonade.’
From Justin to Kelly came out in 2003, a year after Clarkson’s victory on the first season of American Idol. Despite her critiques, the experience taught her to find silver linings even in less favorable situations.
