California Traffic Stop Leads to $800,000 Cocaine Seizure

Authorities in California seized suspected cocaine valued at over $800,000 during a traffic stop. The California Highway Patrol (CHP) reported that a Central Division canine officer stopped a 2025 Honda CR-V in Merced County on August 12 for an alleged traffic violation.

During the stop, the officer noticed several signs of potential criminal activity. A search of the vehicle led to the discovery of a bag containing approximately 30 pounds of suspected cocaine. CHP estimated its street value at $817,200.

Two suspects were arrested after crashing through Camp Pendleton gate with 112 pounds of cocaine and fentanyl.

The driver was arrested and booked into the Merced County Main Jail on charges of possessing cocaine for sale and transporting cocaine across non-contiguous counties. The Merced Area Gang Narcotics Enforcement Team (MAGNET) is investigating the case.

This incident follows a significant drug bust last month by federal authorities. More than 1,000 pounds of cocaine were found beneath the floorboards of a commercial truck entering the U.S. from Mexico. This marks one of the largest drug seizures in Southern California this year.

According to the Justice Department, a half-ton of cocaine was hidden in the floorboards of a truck and trailer at the Calexico Port of Entry, with an estimated street value exceeding $20 million.

In another case, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers discovered over $3.7 million worth of cocaine hidden in a cucumber shipment last month. At the Pharr International Bridge in Texas, CBP officers found 112 packages inside a tractor-trailer. A canine inspection and nonintrusive imaging scan revealed anomalies, leading to the discovery of 278.88 pounds of cocaine, valued at $3,723,654.
