Michigan Mass Shooting: Suspect’s Troubled Legal History

Suspect Involved in Michigan Shooting

Chad Hickman, aged 39, is suspected of killing five people in a mass shooting in rural Michigan. Previously, Hickman had been convicted of child abuse and had faced contentious divorce proceedings involving allegations of domestic violence. Local media reports indicate these past legal issues, but authorities have not linked them directly to the recent tragedy.

Incident Details

Hickman was identified by Michigan State Police as the suspected shooter following multiple shootings in Missaukee County. The tragic event left five victims dead and another critically injured. Hickman’s death followed, though authorities have not disclosed the cause or possible motive as of Saturday.

“This situation is heartbreaking for the community and challenging for the investigators involved,” MSP Lt. Ashley Miller stated. “We remain committed to conducting a thorough investigation and will provide updates as new information becomes available.”

Previous Legal Issues

Court records show Hickman pleaded guilty in 2024 to two misdemeanors: fourth-degree child abuse and contributing to the delinquency of a minor. These charges related to an incident from 2010. He served time in county jail following these convictions, while more serious charges were dismissed.

Under Michigan law, fourth-degree child abuse entails causing physical harm due to an omission or reckless act, or creating an unreasonable risk of harm. Contributing to the delinquency of a minor involves encouraging conduct that leads a child under 17 to become neglected or delinquent.

Police Investigation

Police responded to a report of a shooting around 11:40 a.m. Friday at a home on South LaChance Road in Lake Township. They discovered three deceased individuals and another person who was critically injured and later hospitalized. Authorities issued a warning that the shooter was armed and dangerous, which initiated a large-scale search involving the MSP Emergency Support Team, aviation, and canine units.

Eventually, a fourth person was found dead at a separate location in Missaukee County. Hicksman’s vehicle was spotted in a wooded area near Whitlock Lake in Caldwell Township, where both he and another victim were found dead. At this point, the death toll reached six, with Hickman among the deceased.

Ongoing Investigation

The police have not publicly identified the victims’ connection to Hickman or disclosed any motive for the shootings. Hickman’s cause of death has also not been revealed. Authorities continue to investigate and gather information to provide clarity on the violent event that shook the community.
