A former mayor of Lumberton Township, New Jersey, Gina LaPlaca, confronts fresh accusations along with her husband, Jason Carty. Allegations involve falsified signatures on her nominating petition for a Democratic primary race, as stated by the Burlington County Prosecutor’s Office.

LaPlaca, who remains on the township committee, is charged with making a false statement under oath and knowingly filing a false petition. Charges also include tampering with public records. Jason Carty faces similar charges.

The couple’s petition for the Democratic primary election included an affidavit claiming LaPlaca personally circulated it. However, an investigation revealed multiple signatures were fraudulent, lacking authorization from purported signers. Without these signatures, LaPlaca’s petition would not have met the threshold to qualify as a candidate for the June 2026 Democratic primary.

LaPlaca and Carty are due in court on September 21 in Mount Holly, New Jersey. LaPlaca served as mayor from 2021 to 2025. While no longer mayor, she retained her role on the township committee. Her term expires at the year’s end. In a recent primary, she sought re-election but finished third.

This development follows LaPlaca’s earlier guilty plea in a separate DUI case. In that instance, LaPlaca was charged after driving intoxicated with her child in the vehicle, having a blood alcohol concentration of 0.30%, exceeding the legal limit. Witnesses recorded her car veering off course. Her plea led to three years of supervised probation and mandatory Alcoholics Anonymous meetings.
