Nick Reiner, the son of filmmaker Rob Reiner and photographer-producer Michele Singer Reiner, faces two murder charges related to the stabbing deaths of his parents in December 2025 at their Brentwood home, California.

On Wednesday, prosecutors revealed that a Los Angeles County grand jury has added new special circumstance allegations to the case. The indictment accuses 32-year-old Nick Reiner of committing the murders “by means of lying in wait,” a special circumstance under California law. Additionally, the indictment includes a multiple-murder special circumstance and alleges that Reiner personally used a knife during the incident. These enhancements can lead to more severe penalties if Reiner is convicted.

The Los Angeles Public Defender’s office stated via email that they would not comment further on the case.

The prosecutors assert that in Reiner’s case, the murders involved both multiple victims and lying in wait, suggesting that the attacks included deliberate concealment or an element of surprise.

Los Angeles County officials stated that the addition of the lying-in-wait allegation introduces two special-circumstance claims against Reiner. If proven guilty, Reiner could face life imprisonment without parole or the death penalty. The decision on whether to pursue capital punishment has not been made by the prosecutors.

District Attorney Nathan J. Hochman remarked that the indictment includes the charge of lying-in-wait, describing the alleged acts as “a profound betrayal by someone loved and trusted by those he is accused of killing.”
