The SLEEP system involves a five-part routine:
Set Your Rhythm: Consistently time your meals. Avoid skipped meals to prevent blood sugar fluctuations. Eating consistently throughout the day prepares your body for sleep in the evening.
Leverage Light: Get morning sunlight to set your circadian rhythm. Dimming lights in the evening helps your body prepare for rest.
Eat with Intention: Choose nutrient-rich foods that support sleep, including those rich in serotonin and tryptophan.
Even Out Blood Sugar: Combine lean proteins, healthy fats, and fiber to maintain stable blood sugar levels.
Power Down Nighttime: Establish a consistent nighttime routine, limit electronics and caffeine, and maintain regular sleep and wake times.
Results and Findings
Test panel participants noted improvements in sleep, blood sugar, and weight, including those with challenges like shift workers. Results showed faster sleep onset and better quality sleep within two to three days. Participants with insulin resistance or type 2 diabetes also saw balanced blood sugar levels.
Palinski-Wade says this approach may help reduce evening cravings and improve satiety. Some individuals reported losing up to seven pounds, primarily due to water weight. Reductions in waist circumference and improvements in energy and blood sugar were also observed.
