Dog owners have long believed their pets can sense when they’re having a bad day. Recent research offers an explanation. A study published in iScience reveals that dogs’ brains respond differently to human facial expressions, such as happiness, anger, fear, and sadness.
Researchers used brain scans to study dogs observing photos of people with various emotions. The dogs’ brains reacted differently based on the expression, indicating more than simple categorization as positive or negative.
The Science Behind Dogs’ Emotional Perception
Past studies showed that dogs could distinguish happy from negative faces. It was unclear if they could differentiate specific negative emotions. The new findings suggest they can, particularly distinguishing fear from anger and sadness.
“Dogs’ brains show distinct patterns when seeing fearful faces as opposed to angry or sad ones,” researchers noted. This is the first evidence that dogs can differentiate specific negative expressions rather than sorting them into broad categories.
Understanding why fear stands out could involve its biological importance. Fear can signal danger, as researchers Hernández-Pérez and Cuaya told Newsweek. Previous research found dogs respond differently to human fear and happiness odors. While this study focused on facial expressions, it raises the possibility that fear might be especially significant to dogs across senses.
How Dogs Respond to Human Emotions
The team initially showed eight dogs photos of unfamiliar people with happy or neutral expressions while scanning their brains. Happy faces heightened activity in areas linked to cognitive processing and reward.
The temporal cortex and caudate nucleus became more active with happy faces. Cuaya noted surprise at the caudate nucleus’s involvement. In dogs, this brain area relates to rewards like food, praise, and familiar scents.
Since the caudate nucleus deals with reward processing, its activity indicates a positive affective component in happy faces, even if the person is unfamiliar. Yet, researchers can’t directly measure subjective experiences in dogs.
Researchers then expanded the study to include expressions of happiness, anger, fear, and sadness. Through machine learning, distinct brain activity patterns emerged for each expression.
Dogs could discern happy faces from negative expressions. Fear prompted different brain patterns than anger or sadness, but there was no clear distinction between anger and sadness responses.
This implies dogs might not understand human emotions just as humans do. Instead of categorizing faces as “good” or “bad,” dogs’ brains appear to process some emotional expressions distinctly.
Insight into Dogs’ Emotional Sensitivity
The study suggests dogs are attuned to human behavior. “While we can’t say a dog looks at a fearful face and understands it conceptually like humans, their brains do more than respond to basic visual properties,” Cuaya explained. “They differentiate between specific human expressions.”
The dogs saw still photos of strangers rather than interacting with known people. In reality, dogs access more cues about human emotions. When a dog comforts its owner after a tough day, it may notice subtle signals beyond facial expressions.
Dogs’ Evolving Social Skills
Dogs’ understanding of human social cues links to their long cohabitation with humans. Over millennia, dogs developed skills to communicate with humans, including interpreting expressions.
Behavioral studies show that some dogs change behavior when sensing human sadness. Real-life scenarios offer more emotional cues than the study’s photos. The study included 12 dogs, all pets familiar with human interaction. It may not apply to dogs with different experiences, like strays. More research is needed to understand how dogs interpret emotions in various contexts.
Despite limitations, the findings help explain why dogs often respond to human emotions. They may not fully grasp sadness, fear, or happiness, but their brains seem finely tuned to facial signals.
