The typhoon made landfall in Zhejiang province on Sunday evening with winds exceeding 90 mph before weakening to a tropical storm.

Dolphin’s impact extended to Anhui, Jiangsu, and Shandong provinces, with continued heavy rainfall on Monday. In the suburban districts of Jiading and Qingpu, residents faced waterlogged streets. Videos shared on social media depicted locals navigating through knee-high water, though these clips remain unverified.

Severe weather conditions caused substantial disruption in air travel. Shanghai’s airports canceled 943 flights, reducing their capacity by close to 40% on Monday, according to state television CCTV. The powerful winds and rain also overturned a truck in Wenzhou, Zhejiang, as shown in local TikTok footage.

Dolphin stands as the year’s strongest typhoon in China, expected to push further inland affecting central provinces such as Hubei and Henan. Beijing authorities have issued warnings for heavy rainfall, preparing to enact flood control measures by Tuesday. The typhoon has already covered a distance of over 3,700 miles and is marked by its extensive cloud system, engulfing China’s eastern regions.

Parallel comparisons are being drawn between Dolphin and Typhoon Doksuri from 2023. That earlier typhoon wrought havoc in southeastern Fujian province before delivering record rainfall in Beijing. As the storms head north, colder air will create additional rainfall challenges in Beijing, Tianjin, and Hebei up to Thursday, as reported by CCTV.
